Midwifery and Abortion in Terry Pratchett’s “Equal Rites”

Midwifery and Abortion in Terry Pratchett’s “Equal Rites”

I just finished reading Terry Pratchett’s Equal Rites, and noticed several somewhat coded references to women’s reproductive health topics, and would love to know if other readers caught others. First up, “Old Granny is up with my wife right now,” said by the smith, whose wife is giving birth. “Granny” is a common old term in the U.S. south for a lay midwife. Granny Weatherwax is a witch, too, the concepts of witches and midwives as women healers being somewhat intertwined in the imagination and history. Later: “Esk knew that she [Granny] was …Continue Reading

Why It’s Crucial to Learn Healthy Habits

Why It’s Crucial to Learn Healthy Habits

Some people make a beeline for potato chips or M&Ms when they feel stressed, but mental strain doesn’t have to trigger bad habits. In fact, you’re just as likely to cling to healthy habits when you’ve exhausted your self-control, according to five new studies soon to be published in Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. In the first study, researchers tracked MBA students in the weeks leading up to and during their exams, when all of their self-control was devoted to hitting the books. During exam weeks, students were most likely to stick to whatever their pre-existing habits were, whether the behaviors were healthy (like eating a wholesome breakfast) or not-so-healthy…Continue Reading

“Educate Congress” Accomplished: Every Member Now Has a Copy of “Our Bodies, Ourselves”

Every member of Congress has pages of accurate information on women’s health at their fingertips – more than 900 pages to be exact – now that they have the latest edition of “Our Bodies, Ourselves.” Thanks to supporters of OBOS’s Educate Congress campaign – inspired by a road trip to deliver “Our Bodies, Ourselves” to then-Rep. Todd Akin – we hand-delivered or mailed the newest edition and a letter signed by prominent health policy experts to all members of the U.S. House and Senate. Educate Congress launched with a simple premise: Everyone deserves access to accurate information concerning women’s reproductive and sexual health – especially those who write the laws. Deliveries began Feb. 28, when I spent the day meeting with …Continue Reading

Campaign Against Gender-Based Hate Speech on Facebook – Activists Win!

Last week, Women, Action and the Media (WAM!), The Everyday Sexism Project, and writer/activist Soraya Chemaly — with the backing of more than 100 organizations, including Our Bodies Ourselves — issued an open letter to Facebook calling for the social media giant to address hate speech targeted at girls and women. Facebook pages that had been allowed, despite the company’s existing anti-violence content policy, featured depictions of men kicking “sluts,” images of beaten and restrained women, and numerous rape jokes. A link to examples is provided on this WAM! page. Smartly, the #FBrape campaign asked supporters …Continue Reading

Is Yoga on Your To-Don’t List?

Is Yoga on Your To-Don’t List?

Long Description: Practice yoga for flexibility, balance and strength throughout your 50s and beyond with a class that suits your body. About 10 years ago, I decided I needed to add some variety to my workout routine. I also craved something a bit slower-paced and meditative. So I took up yoga.I loved the way it stretched out my body. I loved the way it forced me to slow down and relax. I loved the way I felt when I took that special time out from my busy life. Mushrooms and Your Health: You Either Love Them or Hate Them, but Here Are Reasons to Try to Love Them

Mushrooms and Your Health: You Either Love Them or Hate Them, but Here Are Reasons to Try to Love Them

Long Description: Try eating more mushrooms—they can help you manage weight, strengthen immunity and raise levels of vitamin D. Many years ago, after I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I visited an herbalist. At the time—this was more than 20 years ago—herbs were something I thought of as growing in your garden and being used to enhance the flavor of foods, not something you ingested in liquid, capsule or pill form. But this herbalist was extremely well-respected, knowledgeable and progressive, and I was anxious for advice to keep myself healthy.
